Scary Encounter With A Trawler In The Gulf of Suez

South entrance to the Suez canal lays at the Gulf of Suez. It is probably one of the busiest places in the maritime world. The mix of cargo vessels, trawlers, local transport, and pleasure nautical vessels are competing for safe passage.

In the travel back to Europe from Reunion island, “Kli-Kli” had to pass through the Gulf and Suez Canal. They traveled the whole day. On 27. November, at 00:45, a close encounter with Trawler happened. Sailing just 3 knots, “Kli-Kli” could not escape a much bigger boat under trawling. “Kli-Kli” crew, performed escape maneuver, but, Trawler did the same, and both ships find themselves in the same problem again.

Unavoidable happened. Two meters higher bow slammed at the first third of the port side of “Kli-Kli”, tearing apart everything on its way. The carnage starts by tearing the main mast port side shrouds, bending the spreader, and cutting the main sail. At the end, bow hits mizzen mast and demolished it into the sea centimeters of the head of one of crew members.

“Kli-Kli” was wounded, but survived. Crew was not injured during this raid.
